Amarnath Yatra decision to be taken only after reviewing COVID-19 situation

As the lockdown in India continues, there’s been ongoing indecision about the annual Amarnath Yatra that takes place in south Kashmir Himalayas. The pilgrimage was earlier cancelled on Wednesday, but the order was withdrawn soon after. The administration now says that the decision to continue or discontinue the Amarnath Yatra would be taken only after reviewing the situation in the country.

The pilgrimage is to start from June 23, and will go on for 43 days until August 3. As the fate of the pilgrimage seems uncertain right now, it is important to note that the pilgrimage was cancelled due to security reasons last year.

The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) had earlier said through the Jammu and Kashmir Information Department that it has made the decision to cancel the yatra due to the Coronavirus outbreak. In that statement, it was mentioned that 77 red zones were identified in the Kashmir valley, those that fell in the yatra route. Hence, the various facilities that are attached to the yatra, such as langars, medical facility, camping, etc, would not be possible.

It goes without saying that the safety of pilgrims is of utmost importance, and with India under lockdown until May 3, the yatra remains doubtful. SASB also noted that by cancelling the Amarnath Yatra would set a good example to all such religious pilgrimages, and to give safety the utmost priority at the moment. It was also said that the organisation is contemplating televising puja and darshan of the Shiva Linga to devotees across the world.

After furnishing these details, there was yet another official statement that said that the previous statement cancelling the yatra has been withdrawn, and a decision would be made after further review.
