Add Air Conditioning; $425 – We replaced the toilet in the closet with a portable room air conditioner. We hired out the electrical and plumbing and did the duct taping ourselves… we got what we paid for. $365 for the air conditioner, about $60 of other materials & labor including upgraded electrical outlets.

While having your own computer is not mandatory (in fact, I was one of the few travelers I ran across who had one), it is handy if, like me, you plan on keeping an online journal of your travels. Sure, there are Internet cafes everywhere (and I mean everywhere—there was even one in a little beach-side town I stayed at in India). But these places often charge by the minute, and there can frequently be queues of people waiting to sign on. Since I had my own laptop, I could write my journal entries anytime and then upload them when I found a place with free wireless Internet access (something that becomes more abundant every day). I also had the luxury of downloading the pictures from my digital camera to my hard drive, instead of having to wait until I had access to an Internet cafe computer or a photo shop that could transfer them to a CD.

Re Narbit comment: Where did you ship your passport in Chicago? Was it our firm? OR consulate directly? You won’t get your visa in time. If you shipped to the consulate directly, I recommend to call/email them and get in touch to someone. Be persistent. You have to beg for help. Otherwise, visa will arrive after your intended travel date. If you can re-route documents to us, we do have expediting process. But, we can help nly if your visa processing has not started with the consulate yet.

DonGertzJr – Many full-time RVers choose Texas as their domicile. If you live there, or spend a lot of time there, you might be best off keeping your residency there. You’d have to go back to SD to renew your license, so it’s only a good idea if you plan to travel there every 5 years. It is hard to compare…each state has its advantages.

For us, the only exception to this carry-on rule is when travelling for longer assignment. There are just too many things to bring along even if nowadays, almost everything is available and if not in your specific destination, then often easily available in the next country. The airline cannot lose what I do not check in nor can the wretches charge me for it and I’m first to the taxi lines in countries with 10 taxis and only 2 are at the airport!

It’s a good idea, at the very least, to know where you’ll be staying in each city you stop in before you arrive. I rarely booked reservations for accommodations more than a week in advance, and rarely for more than one or two nights. That way, if I didn’t like the place I was staying I wasn’t locked in for a longer stay, and if I enjoyed the place I could usually extend my stay.Travel
