Hotels in Himachal will reopen only after mid-September, others may open sooner conditions apply

Now that the Government of India and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has shown the green light to many commercial and government institutions as well as religious establishments to function after staying locked down for more than two months, a lot of hotels have opened their bookings in anticipation of tourists who may be interested in travelling in the coming months. However, hotels in Himachal Pradesh won’t welcome tourists before mid-September.

Himachal Pradesh is considered to be an ideal vacation destination for those, who want to escape the summer heat. Specially for North Indians, who do not leave the opportunity to pack their bags and head to the mountains for a quick weekend getaway and to experience the winter chill. The state is highly dependent on tourism, apart from horticulture and hydroelectric power. However, with the increasing number of COVID-19 positive cases, they are in no hurry to open the 450 hotels in the state anytime soon.

While Himachal Pradesh CM Jai Ram Thakur had proposed to start Quarantine Tourism to pool in revenue via tourist arrivals in the state, the hotel bodies and homestay owners did not like the idea as they feared a spike in COVID-19 cases in the state among the local population and the staff.
Reportedly, the hotel owners won’t reopen their properties for tourists at least till mid-September. News has it that the decision has been taken by the Tourism Industry Stakeholder Association considering that all the Standard Operating procedures (SOPs) are followed well to guarantee safety to the staff and the tourists.

As a norm, hotel staff will be trained in performing thermal screening and maintaining hygiene so that the business can run without any hassle on reopening in future.

A statement issued by Tourism Industry Stakeholders Association said that taking into account the opinion of medical experts, tourism units shall be reopened after August for the welfare of the public. However, only hotels situated near hospitals or those hotels, which are dependent on local tourists may reopen their doors.
