A ropeway is set to come up between Sewri in Mumbai’s east coast and Elephanta Island in Raigad district. According to the latest reports, the 8 km ropeway journey may cost about INR 500 for domestic passengers and INR 1000 for foreigners.

News has it that there shall be 30 seater cable cars to serve along this 14-minute route. To accomplish this project, the government shall establish about 8 to 11 towers in the middle of the sea measuring 50 mt to 150 mt in height.

India’s largest ropeway across sea will allow passenger from Mumbai to reach Elephanta Caves

The Elephanta Caves receive lakhs of tourists every year. Currently, it takes an hour for the cruise in Mumbai to reach the caves. Once the ropeway is completed, it would take merely 40 minutes for people to reach the famous caves. Add to the journey is the wonderful experience of travelling over the sea!

Reportedly, the Mumbai Port Trust has been handling this project. The trip would start from Sewri Fort in Mumbai’s east coast and end across the Mumbai harbour and Raigad district of the Elephanta island or Gharapuri . The project also includes a station with a city tower comprising a viewing gallery, hanging restaurants with a glass base, entertainment deck etc. Plus, the ropeway rides have been planned as such that passengers of all age groups will be able to take them.

Given all these features, this ropeway is meant to be the largest in India.
