Japan dismisses rumours about paying half of costs for international tourists

Just when tourists around the world started day-dreaming of travelling to Japan at half the travel cost, the Japan Tourism Agency rubbished the rumours doing the rounds on social media about its newly proposed Go To Travel campaign.

According to the news reports, the promising Go To Travel campaign is meant to boost domestic travel within Japan after the COVID-19 pandemic, and includes only Japanese nationals travelling within the nation.

However, when the news about the campaign offering privileges to even international tourists got leaked, the tourism agency in Japan tweeted in both Japanese and English offering clarification over the false statement. Several press reports quoted Hirisho Tabata, head of the Japan Tourism Agency, announcing that the agency would launch an initiative, named Go To Travel Campaign in July 2020, which would bear half of the expenses of every tourist as incentive.

As per a document issued by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, the Go To Travel program would offer travel vouchers that would pay up to ¥ 20,000 per tourist per stay for food and accommodation.

By the time the Japanese Tourism Agency could issue the right information regarding the campaign, the false news went viral all around the world.
