The Philippines extends travel ban on travellers coming from India

The Philippines has extended its travel ban that was placed earlier this year. The ban comes after the highly infectious variety of COVID 19 is taking over the world. The Philippines has therefore extended the travel ban for travellers from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates.

According to Philippines’ Presidential Spokesman, Harry Roque, the travel ban has now been extended until June 30. The spokesman said that the travel ban extension has been approved by President Rodrigo Duterte.

The travel ban was initially imposed on India on April 29, during a time when India was battling a deadly coronavirus outbreak that infected numerous people. The country’s frontline workers were working overtime to contain the outbreak. The Philippines had then banned travellers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka on May 7.

The Philippines has further banned arrivals from Oman, and the UAE on May 15. The decision was taken after Filipino workers coming from these countries were tested positive for coronavirus. Not just this, but the travellers were infected by the Delta variant of the virus.

So far, The Philippines has reported 1322053 confirmed cases, and a total 22845 deaths. The Delta variant of the virus could spin things out of control as it has already done in other places, especially in India.
