Weather: Winter travel advisory starting Friday afternoon, up to 12 cm of snow, parking ban Saturday

With up to 12 cm of snow in the forecast, the city has declared a daytime winter parking ban from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.

During a ban, parking is prohibited on city streets and vehicles may be ticketed and towed.

On-street monthly parking permit holders are exempt in residential parking permit zones.

W winter weather travel advisory is in effect beginning late Friday afternoon, as forecasters expect from seven to 12 cm of snow by early Saturday morning.

Light snow is expected to get heavier late Friday afternoon or evening then let up early Saturday morning, Environment and Climate Change Canada said.

It was -4 C with a wind chill of -10 at the Ottawa airport as of 7 a.m. Friday.

The mercury is headed to -1 C with a wind chill near -7 thanks to wind of up to 15 km/h.

There’s a 40 per cent chance of flurries for Friday morning and early afternoon then periods of snow totalling 2 cm starting in the afternoon, the weather agency predicted.

Five to 10 cm more is forecast for Friday night with an overnight low of -4 C and a wind chill of -8. Wind is expected to become west at 20 km/h gusting to 40 before morning.

There’s a 40 per cent chance of more flurries Saturday with the temperature expected to hold steady near -5 C with a wind chill of -7 in the morning and -13 in the afternoon. Wind is expected to become west at 30 km/h gusting to 50

The temperature is expected to drop to -15 C Saturday night with a 60 per cent chance of flurries.

A mix of sun and cloud and a high of -4 C are predicted for Sunday. There’s a 60 per cent chance of flurries Sunday night with a low of -6 C.

The mercury is expected to reach 6 C Monday with a 60 per cent chance of showers then dip to -6 C with a 60 per cent chance of showers or flurries Monday night.

A mix of sun and cloud and highs of 3 C and 5 C are forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday. Expected lows are -9 C and -1 C.

“Normals” for this time of year are highs of 2 C and lows of -8 C.

Sunrise is at 6:23 a.m. Monday and sunset is at 6:02 p.m.
